Abstract

Every classroom has at least a small percentage of students who face academic struggles due to learning difficulties and/or disabilities. When diligent schools and teachers create support systems to help such struggling students, they face what Thomas Newkirk calls "the paradox of offering help": students' resistance to well-intentioned efforts to help. Sometimes, it may appear that the student has no intrinsic motivation to get better, while at other times, teachers and parents may incorrectly conclude that such a lack of motivation is the very reason for the students’ academic failure. In my presentation, I explore principles and actionable steps that can motivate learning in students with a history of academic struggle and failure.
